by lowering transportation costs and broadening choices for the location of manufacturing plants,
assembly, and distribution sites throughout the world.
A standard shipment from Hong Kong to New York, in the 1970's, took 50 days, today it takes only 17 days.
The transportation of most commodities are now shipped in these containers between a
multitude of destinations in world markets.
There are predominantly of two types Transport containers,
20 ft long rectangular metal boxes
and 40ft long rectangular metal boxes,
which together account for approximately 99% of the total containers in existence.
These containers have become the standard format for moving goods internationally by sea and air
and are increasingly used solely for road and rail.
In 1999, over 200 million container deliveries took place across the world
