Transportation Issues for Shipping Container Housing
When you choose where to buy your shipping container,
one of the most important considerations is the distance of the
container seller from your building site. Transporting containers
is more expensive the further you have to travel.
Many of the companies that sell new or used shipping containers
offer transportation as an extra service, but you must factor in
the EXTRA cost of transportation. If they don't they will be able
to suggest or you can easily find a transportation company that will
deliver your containers to your location. Get a quote and factor this
in to your costs. A cheaper container in the other side of the country
may end up being more expensive when delivery costs are included.
Here is are some things to consider when you are preparuing to transport a
shipping container:
* Immediate Neighbors : head off any objections discuss with your neighbors,
before moving the containers onsite; some regulatory bodies will require this.
* Local Regulations : check the regulations of your local council building authority.
It's possible that a container to be considered a temporary structure and therefore
exempt from the standards of a "normal" building, but it may not. Regulations vary greatly
- BEWARE!!
* Delivery Location: in most cases the delivery of a shipping container is done with a
semi-trailer with the ability to tilt-slide the container off the bed of the trailer.
This takes lots of space in a straight line, (as a guide you need to have more than
80 feet of space in front of the location where the shipping container is to be landed)
and if short on space, you may also need to factor in the hire of a crane
to transfer from the truck to your building site.
Also be aware that because the trailer is a large, long and heavy, some drivers will
not drive off of a road or paved surface.
A container, sitting on a Truck is a HIGH LOAD, consult with your transport company and make
sure you have enough overhead clearance where the truck will deliver your shipping containers.
Especially check the overhead wires!
If your location is any distance from a road or driveway, it is best to discuss this first
with the company that is delivering your containers. If the truck needs to go off the paved
surface you must take into consideration the amount of moisture in the ground, how well
packed the surface is,, slope and the
driver experience. A bogged truck makes a big mess and may incur extra costs.
* The shipping container is designed to be supported only by its four
corners. Although it's possible to put the container directly on the ground,
it's best to provide some suitable foundation to sit the container on providing
level supports with adequate drainage. An uneven site can cause the doors to bind,
so factor in solid support foundations such as: concrete footings, concrete slab, asphalt
or a well packed bed of gravel. This needs to be in place when the container is delivered.
